Chinese Philosophy Day Four Notes “The Confucianism of the Analects” Background: -Confucius was around 550 b.c -Confucius always looked to the Zhou as the ideal dynasty. I. Zhou dynasty A. The Zhou house was frayed into many different localized states. B. Zhou states were largely autonomous at this point. C. Confucius’ successor, Mencius, was born around 370 b.c. 1. Mencius’ philosophy deals with human nature and fate. D. In the analects there is a certain innocence because it was before the times of terrible war. II. Confucius types of people A. 4 categories of people: 1. Shi-4, literary civil servants. 2. Peasant- farmer. 3. Craftsmen. 4. Merchants-> this class was viewed as the lower class. III. Distinction in Confucianism A. Makes a distinction between superior man and inferior man 1. The superior man exhibits righteousness, not wealth.

2. The superior man is someone who can live naturally. IV. Moral causality A. If the ruler is in possession of the mandate of heaven, then the harvests are bountiful and both nature and society are at peace.
