Jorge ThompsonEng. 101 Writing and RhetoricCone SmithResponse5/3/13Response to Lifeboat EthicsIn “Lifeboat Ethics”,Hardin underlines the ethical issue and dilemma of how to appropriately assist the unfortunate and the justification behind doing so. Due to the fact that we are currently living in a time period of much misfortune, this essay accurately pertains to society and encourages us to indulge in a lasting impact and improvement on the life of a friend in need. In the beginning of his essay, Hardin responds to the comparison of Earth as a spaceship, by stating that it can be dangerous when used by misguided idealists to justify suicidal policies for sharing our resources through uncontrolled immigration and foreign aid. In other words, Hardin believes that if the authority of aid falls into the wrong hands while attempting to help others, our country can be just as vulnerable to financial/resource misfortune as the countries in need.
