Phylum Porifera (sponges) Assymetrical Loose assemblage of cells Lack true tissue and organ Filter feeding and heterotrophs Sessile Intracellular digestion Folded wall and pores Reproduction: o Gemmules: asexual reproduction includes budding and the release of stress-resistant aggregates of amoebocytes called gemmules. o Choanocytes and amoebocytes: See below. During sexual reproduction choanocytes and amoebocytes differentiate into gametes. Eggs remain in the mesenchyme but sperm are released and captured by choanocytes or amoebocytes of other sponges. Captured sperm are transported to eggs for fertilizaztion and after a short period, a zygote is expelled from the sponge. Most sponges are hermaphroditic. Grantia Fig 36.3, 36.4, 36.5 (spicules) Epithelial layer: Line the walls on the outside of the simplest sponges. Spongocoel: A central cavity line with choanocytes. Choanocytes: flagellated cells that produce a constant flow of water into a sponge. Porocytes: Cells which create pores in sponges. Osculum: Large hole in the end of the sponge where filtered water exits.
