Justin Cline-Bailey February 4 th , 2008 ID103 – 16 Professor Smith American Experience in the Civil War The Civil War was a very interesting time period . Various different methods of research can be used in finding out about life in the mid 1800’s . One can find information about what life was like by researching letters . One such letter from J . G . Shoup to D . H . Homan in Lacey Springs , Va, 1861 meaning that it is much evidence can be found . Shoup said that “politicks are first and they have run very high and resulted in the election of a damned Black Republican President . ” This indicates that politics were very important at this point in time . Juanita Leisch , author of Civil War Civilians validates this by writing “Men’s social clubs ,… were more often involved in religious or political discussions and demonstrations than in sports tournaments and competitions”(7) . This is a complete reversal from today , where people pay more attention to sporting events such as the Super Bowl than the primaries of other states
