Bidil-Race Medicine or Race Marketing? 02/28/08 In 2005, cardiologists began to prescribe a new drug based on an unusual criterion: whether the patient is black.(self-identified) The controversy is whether lumping people into a few broad racial categories has any medical value. Enter Bidil, a pill that reduces group differences in drug responses to “black and white.” Evidence is that the drug is a lifesaver for many patients. Heart failure affects 5 million Americans, African Americans are 2 and half times more likely to develop it. (.5 die in 5 yrs of diagnosis.) Earlier research suggested that standard heart failure drugs do not work as well in African Americans. But there was evidence that BiDil helped the few African Americans in the studies. NitroMed won a patent to use it just in that group. The study was stopped ahead of schedule when doctors saw BiDil was clearly effective. After roughly 2 years use there was a 43% reduction in deaths. The FDA approved BiDil for use in African Americans- BiDil became the first racially-
