Like Water for ChocolateFood was a big part of the novel, Like Water for Chocolateby Laura Esquivel. The main character, Tita, seems to have magical powers that make people react in a strange way to the food she makes. The exact and precise prepping of ingredients and the emotions that Tita puts into her food is exactly what will come out. It seems like extreme chaos when she is making the food because of the emotions she is feeling but her emotions are just another ingredient that she adds to the food that makes it the dish it is. Right from the beginning of the book, Tita shows her precise techniques while she is making the filling for the wedding cake for her sister. “Place the paste in a pan, add the sugar, and heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture forms a marmalade. Remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly before spreading it on the middle layer of cake.”(31) This quote shows how precise Tita and Nacha were when they made dishes. If anything were to go wrong then the recipe would be ruined. While Nacha and Tita are preparing food Nacha says to Tita, “Now we’re alone in the kitchen, so go ahead and cry, my child, because I don’t want them to see you crying tomorrow.”(29) While Tita is stirring the cake batter she is crying because her sister is marrying her true love. She is putting her sadness into the cake without fully realizing it.
