DP Class Notes: 2.13.13 Gun Opposition Presentation - 1 st speaker o understanding audience o no visuals - 2 nd speaker was most quantitative – used good data/visuals o visual aids o giving direction - 3 rd speaker – woman o accessible o drawing in presentation o applications PERFECTING YOUR SURVEY 1. Read it aloud to yourself 2. Take the survey yourself 3. Pilot test on a friend. That friend will then be excluded from participation in the actual study 4. See what questions the pilot participant has, and ask specific questions of him or her Samples - Don’t say you have a random sample if it isn’t really random o Random sampling occurs only when participants are drawn from the population via unbiased means; all members of the population are equally likely to be selected - Knowing what kind of sample you want should affect your study plans o If you are only interested in students who exercise regularly, you might want to find participants in the gym - Think about what kind of a sample you will get given your data collection method - How to random sample? --- nearly impossible (just acknowledge this) o Assign everyone a number – pick out of hat ---- computer o Have all WesIDs and choose them at random ---- computer o WesBoxes – slip paper into every other box ---- people can’t be categorized in any way --- all people must have equal chance of participating -
