End result is clogging of pumps, filters, and pipes. Often contain polyester (or polypropylene) fibers instead of cotton fibers. Polyester fibers are often strong enough that they clog macerating pumps often used in municipalities to move sewage to the treatment plant. Some upstate NY communities have ifi d id h d notified residents not to use these products. Sewage treatment is carried out by bacteria (aerobic at municipal scale, anaerobic in septic systems) which degrade the materials in the sewage to methane or CO 2 . Polyester and polypropylene fibers are not biodegradable, pass through treatment unaffected. Facial tissues also a problem. Cottonelle products are biodegradable.
