Child and Adolescent Psychology1Lesson 1 Assignment #1: Review of Developmental ResearchMaking inferences from the title of the article, there is both a dependent and independentvariable. The use of internet is the independent variable. The cognitive development inadolescents is the dependent variable. This is because the event can be affected or altered by theuse or interaction of adolescents with the internet (Mills K, 2015).According to Kathryn Mills, the exposure of children and adolescents could have a widearray of ramifications for the cognitive abilities of the aforementioned parties (Tsitsika et al.,2014). There has been a significant rise in the accessibility of internet to children, which hasresulted in their consistently being online. Parents, guardians, policy makers and other interestedparties have brought this matter into their attention (George & Odgers, 2015). Academics andother scholars have noted that there is a lack of experimental research on the matter (Mills K,2015). Mills argues that the main factor that has been hampering the undertaking of theexperimental research is that internet is widely accessible. This factor poses a problem in that there is a lack of experiment subjects. The effects canbe studied on children who have been exposed to the internet but it is practically impossible tofind adolescents who haven’t. There would be a lack of data to make comparisons to, thus;rendering the veracity of the research results suspect (Mills K, 2015). The hypothesis that is atthe heart of the article is that exposure to the internet has possible effects on the cognitiveabilities of adolescents.Kathryn Mills has carried out a theoretical research. This end was achieved by lookingthrough peer reviewed works, scholarly articles and other literary works that deal with childdevelopment and psychology (Mills K, 2015). The article highlights the need to use appropriatesearch phrases when dealing with online search engines in order to acquire appropriate results.
