FEB 25 th 2021 We arrived in late 1968 and early 1969 The US military believes they can still win this war as long as they maintain Air support and send more troops to flush out the enemy. The Tet offensive marked a turning point in the war. Because it brought open a new political front rather than a purely military conflict. American leadership now talks about bringing peace rather than gaining a military victory which is a huge change in the mentality of the American war effort. And running on the promise of having a secret peace plan Richard Nixon the republican candidate for president wins the presidency and under Nixon the US executes the Vietnamization Program. 1968-1972. This would be the last phase of American involvement in the war. The NLF at this point had been nearly decimated after the Tet offensive since they suffered tremendous losses and as a military forces they were greatly weakened until 1971 in which they were able to build up their coalition and become a fearsome military power in the war. The NLF no longer confronts and moves back underground to rebuild their bases and recruit more people. Currently in 1968 the Vietnamization program which involves partial American withdrawal and the militarization of ARVN since the entire time the ARVN forces were relegated to a secondary role in the war, now the US were planning on upgrade the military potential of ARVN the reason they did not do this earlier was because ARVN forces was often hampered by political infighting.
