Grace Van Winkle PHIL 220 1/28/11 HW#3: Republic This work focuses around the search for goodness, including what goodness is, how people come to recognize it, and how it affects the roles of government officials. Socrates is trying to explain what goodness is to his pupils, including Plato, the narrator of the work. Plato points out that society can only be perfect if the government officials and people who run the community possess true knowledge of goodness, instead of merely appearing to make moral decisions. Plato emphasizes that both knowledge of goodness and the practice moral beliefs are necessary, because having one without the other is harmful. Because he cannot explicitly define what goodness is, Socrates uses the Simile of the Sun to describe it, comparing goodness to the sun, because it sheds light on truth and knowledge, forming a link between what we see and what we believe. Socrates also uses the allegory of the cave to explain how people grow in knowledge, comparing them to people who are kept in a cave and know nothing of the outside world. When
