Grace Van Winkle PHIL 220 1/31/11 HW#4: Summa Theologica The theme of this work, written by Thomas Aquinas, focuses on the existence of God and whether or not it can be proven. The three main questions Aquinas addresses are whether the existence of God is self-evident, whether it can be demonstrated that God exists, and whether God exists. Aquinas presents objections to his ideas, and then proceeds to give his counter- argument. The objections for the first question make the claim that the existence of God is self- evident because of the existence of truth and because as soon as something exists mentally, it exists actually. Aquinas refutes these arguments, saying that there is not one definitive truth, or Primal Truth, that applies to all people, and that possessing the idea that God exists is not the same as knowing absolutely that God exists. Therefore, the existence of God is not self-evident. The objections for the second question say that the existence of God cannot be demonstrated
