Grace Van Winkle PHIL 220 2/28/11 HW#6: Will to Believe This passage deals with the topic of belief, and how it is practiced and manifested in people’s lives. William James describes different kinds of choices, or options, that exist in life, categorizing them as living or dead, forced or avoidable, and momentous or trivial. He discusses whether we believe something because it is logical or if we believe it because of our passionate nature. He states that because we cannot change our beliefs by simply willing them to change, which means that beliefs are not based on intellect alone. However, we also cannot assume that we believe things solely of our own volition, because we must be in submission to the many facts and laws that rule our world, which are impersonal and unchangeable. Furthermore, when something cannot be determined by intellect alone, our passion comes into play and helps us decide what we believe. James also describes Clifford’s argument, which states that we must
