At the heart of this story is the narrator’s search for truth as well as her own identity. All around Lily, the main character, the truth is in question and unstable. Most of this is her own fault, weaving a web of lies from Sylvan to Tiburon. Even when she arrives at the house of the beekeeper August, she cannot stop lying. In an ironic twist, August and her sisters see through the lies as soon as Lily arrives at their doorstep asking for shelter, entirely unbeknownst to Lily. In fact, Lily believes that she has the upper hand in terms of knowledge until she is confronted with the truth by August.
