Jacob Matson Prof Bankard PHL201 May 3, 2007 A Brief Argument Supporting Philosophical Materialism There are many different philosophical views which attempt to explain phenomena that occur in the natural world, or for that matter, the universe. One view that is associated with reductionism is called materialism. For the purpose of this paper, materialism states that everything that exists, or could ever exist, is completely physical. Additionally, humans can be adequately explained in terms of their physical components. Current scientific data suggest that materialism is true because humans can indeed be explained in terms of their physical components, primarily through neuroscience and biological development. Neuroscience is the field of scientific study concerned with the nervous system and its relationship to the rest of the body. As understanding of how the nervous system functions increases, the scientific support for materialism increases because causes within brains are now correctly attributed to human actions and events. Biological development also supports materialism because humans begin life as entirely physical beings, which necessarily means nothing non- physical can be added, and thereby the human mind and body is completely physical. Materialism operates on the assumption that everything that everything that exists is entirely physical; however this assumption also requires an assumption that currently unexplainable phenomena will be explained by science in the future.
