SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES Chapter 1 Thinking Critically with Psychological Science 1. What is the definition of psychology? Answer: The science of mental events (cognition, affect, motivation) and  behavior. How does “empiricism” relate to this definition? Is empiricism rationalism?  Why is the scientific attitude of “skepticism” important? Please note: Until the 20s, psychology was defined as the science of mental  life. From the 20s to the 60s, behaviorism was in vogue and psychology was  defined as the science of (observable) behavior. 2. What is the difference between a clinical psychologist and a psychiatrist?  What is the specialty of the psychiatrist and what is the specialty of the clinical  psychologist? Answer: Clinical psychologists are trained in psychological (read scientific)  testing. Psychiatrists are trained in pharmacotherapy. Based on the specialty of the psychiatrist (see above), what might be a problem in  referring someone to a psychiatrist for a mental health problem?  What are some of the different titles of individuals who may practice as therapists? Answer: Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Clinical Specialists in Psychiatric  Mental Health Nursing, Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs), and  Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs). Please note that in many states  the above are licensed by state governmental agencies (sometimes they are  licensed by national licensing agencies). Further, note that the licensing  requirements may vary from state to state. Many other types of individuals  also do limited counseling, for example, school counselors, pastoral  counselors, etc. Having a license doesn’t ensure quality but at least the  individual had to go through a qualifying process before they began to  practice. Further, clients who go to licensed therapists can file complaints  to the licensing agency if the therapy/counseling experience was negative  or harmful. In extreme cases the therapist can lose their license to practice.
