Cailin Johnson-Smart February 19 th , 2008 Chemistry 1M Ex #5 Characterization of an Unknown Acid Abstract: By titrating an unknown weak acid with a strong base and measuring with a pH meter, calculating the unknown acid was possible. From the volume at the equivalence point, the moles of the acid was 0.0027 mol NaOH. The molar mass of the acid was calculated to be 118.22g. The ½ V Equiv was 13.75 mL. The acid’s pKa was calculated to be 4.44. The melting point of the acid was 122˚C and therefore knowing the molar mass, the pKa, and the melting point of the unknown acid, the unknown acid was benzoic acid. Results: Mass of unknown acid 0.3129g M NaOH 0.0966 M NaOH Buret Reading, initial volume 7.7 mL Initial pH 3.00 N NaOH 0.0027 Mo NaOH Molar Mass of acid 118.22g ½ Volume of Equivalency 13.75mL Average Volume 27.5 mL Average pH 4.37 Name of Unknown acid Benzoic Acid See Graph for Titration curve.
