Unformatted text preview: Mortality Population Issues April 7, 2008 Mortality Outline Components of mortality: Lifespan versus Longevity Measuring mortality Worldwide mortality differentials link between mortality and economic development the Epidemiological Transition U.S. mortality time trends differentials by race, gender, and socioeconomic status Mortality Two components of mortality: 1. Lifespan : Theoretical maximum; the oldest age to which a human could possibly survive presumed to be around 122 years maximum population average around 85 determined by biological limits 2. Longevity : How long people, on average, actually live determined by both biological factors and social factors Measuring Mortality (part 1) Crude Death Rate (CDR) CDR = (# deaths / total population) x 1000 Example: 2000 US data: Total deaths = 2,435,300 Total mid-year population = 282,164,800 CDR = ( 2435300 / 282164800 ) * 1000 = 8.63 = 8.63 deaths per 1,000 population in 2000 Crude Death Rate (CDR) Advantages Useful measure of mortalitys contribution to change in the size of the population Disadvantages CDR influenced by pop age structure Not everyone is at equal risk of dying higher rates at certain ages u n d e r 1 1- 4 5- 9 1- 1 4 1 5- 1 9 2- 2 4 2 5- 2 9 3- 3 4 3 5- 3 9 4- 4 4 4 5- 4 9 5- 5 4 5 5- 5 9 6- 6 4 6 5- 6 9 7- 7 4 Age group 10 20 30 40 50 D e a t h s p e r 1 , p o p u l a t i o n Zimbabwe Canada Variations in the age structure of mortality:...
