3 Managers with greater awareness of their own behavior—and of how they are perceived by others—are more effective in leading and managing others. Recent research shows that people who understand how they are viewed by others are seen as better leaders, better colleagues, and better performers; they also receive more promotions and higher pay. This Leadership 360 exercise in Fordham Gabelli School of Business's Management I course provides students with feedback on how their perceptions of themselves line up with others’ perceptions of them. You'll find information on your self ratings as well as other peoples’ ratings of you across the following behavioral domains: Decision making, Reading others, Motivating self and others, Influencing others and Communication, Managing conflict, Working in teams, Listening and Assertiveness. Within each domain, respondents rated how frequently you engaged in distinct behaviors related to the domain. Some of these behaviors are consistent with expert views on good leadership (e.g., Is able to persuade other people and change their opinions). Other behaviors are generally inconsistent with good leadership (e.g., Overanalyzes decisions, spending too much time thinking rather than acting). Respondents rated these behaviors on a scale ranging from “Never” to 7=“Always.” In the case of good leadership behaviors, the scale was from 1=Never to 7=Always. In the case of ineffective behaviors, items were scored from 1=Always to 7=Never. In short, it may help to remember that higher numerical scores always mean more frequent effective behaviors and less frequent ineffective behaviors. The report begins with a few overview charts which give general portraits of how well you scored across all items within each domain, first comparing your self-views vs. the combined views of all others, next comparing the views of your personal choice raters with those of your ip teammates, and finally comparing your ip teammates' views of you with the average ip teammate views of the average Core T student this term. It’s important to look more closely at the detailed individual item scores provided in the subsequent pages as well.
