Peers How Important Are Peers? We all want to be unique, but we also want to “fit in” with our peers.  Odd, isn’t  it? Peer acceptance or rejection shapes students’ attitudes towards school. Peers are our: Social role models Behavioral conditioners Self-identity mirrors Social and cognitive “practice” partners, and Support network and reassurance givers. Peer Status Categories Popular students Good skills, usually nice Average students Controversial students Neglected students Rejected students Aggressive & Nonaggressive Which students do you think are most likely to switch status roles over time?  Which are  the least likely? Some Influence on Peer Status Family interactions and parenting styles Aggressiveness/social skills Birth order Academic ability Physical attractiveness How common your name is (?!?!)
