Ethan Kroymann Philosophy 106 Assignment Five Alan Dershowitz argues that torturing a terrorist who knows the location of a ticking time bomb is acceptable as long as the methods and systems are highly regulated. Some scholars have argued that torture is wrong even if it is limited to only rare cases; they say that the government would eventually abuse the power to determine when torture was necessary. Bentham bases his argument on case utilitarianism that claims that the benefits outweigh the costs. Terrorism could be justified by this also. Take for example, a Jewish person killing German children in order to stop the Holocaust. A slippery slope presents itself because people would find it hard to define the limits of their torture. The death penalty is reserved for convicted killers, so therefore torture should be reserved for convicted terrorists. Opposition to torture is often based on historical considerations.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
