Tory Mathieson 9/11/12 SOC 273: Sociology of Education Prof. Long Sociology of Education: Theories Functionalist Theory:  The Functionalist  theory of education “stresses the  interdependence of the social system” and views society as a machine that must be  cooperative and united. The functionalist view holds that societies need rituals and  institutions in order to maintain social order and control. Thus the role of school  institution is to “socialize students into the appropriate values and sort and select students according to their abilities”. According to Parsons, a functionalist theorist: “inequality is  functional and necessary in all societies”.  Education, then, is “the vehicle in ensuring the  continual movement toward this meritocratic system”. Education provides social  mobility.  Ed   Skills   increase in productivity and wages Ed   Common culture/knowledge   social cohesion and better democracy Conflict Theory:  The Conflict theory of education focuses on education as a status  symbol and the role of power and struggle in society and educational institutions.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
