UPS and Smart Labels The United Parcel Service has set the standard for logistics and package delivery systems throughout the globe. Due primarily to large investments in information technology over the past 20 years, UPS has gained a huge competitive advantage and set the standard for how packages are being delivered today. Tools such as the Delivery Information Acquisition Device (DIAD) and Smart Labels are the cornerstones to the information system which has transformed UPS into the business it has become. When analyzing the success of UPS, one must fully understand these innovations and how they work together to create the most efficient package delivery system on Earth. First of all, the DIAD is a handheld device carried by every UPS delivery driver. Its purpose is to receive shipment information from a shipper, relay that information to a central UPS location and provide up-to-the-second tracking information on that shipment until it is delivered.
