Kassie Ferraro SOCY 2031-003 Social Problems Allison Hicks Reading Assignment # 2 Beginnings 1. The genius of American prison expansion is that they offer something for everybody. They are financially beneficial to individuals as well as towns. Chapter 3 1. Attica came to symbolize what was wrong with American prisons: inmates were being coddled, had too many rights, and were out of control. Many people began to believe the criminal justice system was not working and that it was flawed. Chapter 5 1. A penitentiary is a place for imprisonment, reformatory discipline, or punishment; a prison maintained in the U.S. by a state or the federal government for serious offenders. A reformatory is a penal institution for the discipline, reformation, and training of young or first offenders. Based on the crime, we still offer indeterminate sentencing and parole still exists today. Chapter 7 and 8 1. Violence flourished due to overpopulation of prisons. Guards were under
