Confucius ( o & & &551-479 BC Zhou Dynasty o (1027-777) Zhou Features • Zhou was a semi-nomadic tribe. • Dynasty lasted between 1027-777BC • Often divided between Eastern and Western Zhou, with the Eastern part similar to “Chinese” culture • Was a feudal monarchy Spring and Autumn Period ( o & & 722-481 BC Warring States Period (403-221 BC) o & Map of China: o& “China” during Warring States Period Fundamental Issue: Order • Why? • How is this different than US political history? • Springs and Autumn and Warring States period known for intellectual ferment, centered around finding a solution to questions of political order • Annales School: the “longue duree” Confucius • Born into elite family, but one that was losing status. • Living during period known for violence, war, intrigue and corruption. • Served as an official, but left office when he was 50 to return home and write. Core Beliefs • Society’s most serious problems stemmed from the lack of morality, particularly at the leadership level. • A strong and stable society is one in which people had well-defined responsibilities towards each other, family, and government....
