Gordon McCormick Psy420 Paper #3 Coping with Death in Childhood Understanding and coping with death is often a part of emotional development for young people. The experience of dealing with death differs from person to person depending on variables like the age of the individual, and their support network. Being able to help a child understand and deal with loss while at the same time dealing with your own personal loss is critical. The website below, kidshealth.org, offers tools to help both children dealing with the loss of a loved one and also tools to educate adults on ways to help children cope with death The first thing the website advises to adults helping children cope with death is honesty. It stresses being honest with your child and encouraging questions from them. The site reminds adults it's important to create an atmosphere of comfort and openness and send the message that there's no one right or wrong way to feel. The website also advises that if adults feel they need help in helping children, that they reach out to any of a numerous amount of resources out there available to them many of which the site links directly to.
