Ryan Tentler Professor Katalenic Eng 101 10/5/12 Mathematics is the Best Major Entering college, I was set on one major: mathematics. I chose this major because I am good at math, but also because I really enjoy the subject. Mathematics is a challenging but very rewarding major. At Stetson University, the math curriculum is strict and has a very specific course schedule. This specific course schedule has many challenges and rewards. After Stetson, I will have multiple options in choosing a career or continuing on to graduate school. In my opinion, mathematics is one of the best majors offered here at Stetson. Here at Stetson, students should expect a full load as a mathematics major. The student’s schedule will be filled with mathematics courses, including calculus one, two and three. According to the Stetson math requirements website, students with “a major in mathematics requires 13 mathematics courses, in addition to the general education requirements” (np). However, something the Stetson math requirements website does not inform you is that you must take these classes in a specific order. In order for a student to graduate in four years, they must at least take three math courses each year. This might cause some complications for me, as I am currently not enrolled in any math courses for my first semester. This could possibly put me back another year. This is due to the fact that some math courses are only offered during either the fall or spring. Since my options are limited to when I can take each math course, my options for taking other classes that I want are limited. In addition to taking math classes, I would like to take courses in education. Teaching math is a possible career choice for me, and courses in education
Tentler 2 would help me reach that goal. There are both advantages and disadvantages to having this strict schedule. I believe having a specific schedule will guide me in the right direction for picking classes for my major. Knowing this, I will have much more time focusing on my curriculum during each semester rather than worrying about what classes I might or might not have to take.
