Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby) . - Assonance/consonance- “tr an sitory ench an ted mom en t m an Plus alliteration in m oment m an m ust –interweaves the two concepts- brief moment and man are intertwined - Alliteration- have held his—combined with moment man must and the assonance of the other words—makes a feeling of holding your breath- keeps flowing without a stop- no room to take a breath because of the lines fluidity - Assonance- breath, presence- continuing to make the passage fluid (also sort of like letting go of the breath- breathing out?) - Syllables- 1, 1, 4, 3, 2, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 3, 2, 2, 1, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 1, 3, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 3, 1, 2, 4, 1, 1, 1, 3, 1, 2 Transitory enchanted moment man- 4, 3, 2, 1, - leaving- the moment is going away - Continent compelled contemplation- like imprisonment- overpowering with harsh consonants like ‘c’ - Face to face for- alliteration- like the confrontation- yet not a harsh consonant - Prepositions in the last line- break the fluidity of the passage- moment is over and will never happen again For, in, with, to, for Breaks the rhythm- breaking the enchanted moment Breaking the contemplation Last time in history it will ever happen Phrase Break-up: “…for a transitory enchanted moment man must have held his breath in the presence of this continent, compelled into an æsthetic contemplation
