One significant change that I experienced last semester was being assigned a night shift clinical for my preceptorship experience. The process leading up to this news had already left me feeling frustrated and anxious since I had not yet been paired up with a preceptor while some of my peers had already completed their first or second shift. I remember my stomach dropping when I heard that I was assigned a night shift rotation. I immediately became anxious at the thought of balancing this challenge with the responsibility of being a freshmen RA. It turned out that my preceptor worked consistent Friday night shifts which allowed me to have Saturday morning to sleep in and re-adjust my body for the week. It was still quite difficult each time I left for clinical because I always felt exhausted after a long week of school and hall activities. I watched as my residents headed off to do some fun activity and bit my teeth at the thought of staying up all night when I hadn’t had a chance to nap that day. Overall, it helped me to think that I was blessed to have an opportunity to work in the SICU like I had hoped, and that I was really lucky that the SON at PLNU was starting the Preceptorship opportunity during our year.
