NSG 450/451: Mental Health **SSRI’s are the drug of choice for treating anxiety disorders, Benzodiazapenes are the most commonly used Psychopharmacology: Commonly Used Medications Drug Class Brand Name Generic Name Target Disorder Target Symptoms Mechanism of Action Major Adverse Reactions Patient Education Antidepressants Selective Serotonin  Reuptake Inhibitors Panic Disorder, OCD, Generalized Anxiety Disorder GAD, PTSD Affects the concentration and activity of the neurotransmitter serotonin, a chemical in the brain thought to be linked to anxiety disorders. Insomnia/sleepines s, sexual dysfunction, and weight gain Nausea , constipation, asthenia, dry mouth, sweating, decreased libido, lots of sexual affects dry mouth, use sugarless gums, no physical/ addition or psychological dependence. Young adults: increased risk of suicide for first 1-2 months, SSRI Discontinuation Syndrome Celexa Citalopram Lexapro Escitalopram Luvox Fluvoxamine Luvox CR Fluvoxamine *Although classified under ‘anti- depressants’, these SSRI’s treat anxiety disorders ** *Paxil Paroxetine *ProZac Fluoxetine (most evidence supports the effectiveness of this SSRI) *Zoloft Sertraline Tricyclic  Antidepressants Adapin (same as Sinequan below) Doxepin PD, PTSD, GAD, OCD (Anafranil only) Affects the
