Depression: -mood –sleep –agitation – -Don’t worry about the theorists -lack of caring, sadness, hopelessness, denial, regress -dissociate, compartmentalize, projection, reaction formation Emotional Responsiveness: Adaptive -openness/awareness of feelings -feelings provide us with valuable learning experiences -gives feedback about ourselves/relationships -helps us function more effectively -emotions plays a very different role than our thoughts do Maladaptive -deny/detachment of emotions -suppression of emotions Mood: what they feel on the inside (subjective) Mood Disorders: DSM-IV Depressive Disorders:  major depressive, dysthymic Bipolar Disorders:  bipolar I, bipolar II Depression: -feelings/emotions, cognition/bx. Very difficult to concentrate -agitated depression is more common -depression: greatest cause of disability worldwide A. Five or more of the following symptoms: B. –present during the 2 week period
