In Irozange the love suicide of a young artist just returned from Paris is told in the form of his story. That artist is Togo Seiji. I heard Seiji's story from time to time during the five or six years that I lived with him, and using this as the basis, I made a narrative in my own style . It gives me pause to think of myself as someone who made a novel out of the incredibly shocking story of the man with whom I lived. I also pause when I think about the state of mind of a man who told me such stories. All of this happened at a certain point when we were both young; now I feel something akin to gratitude toward Seiji. "I wonder where I should start?" he said, reflecting for some time before slowly starting to speak: I’d been living abroad and as soon as I returned home I rented a small house in Kamata with three rooms downstairs and two upstairs. Since I occupied the upstairs and my wife and child the downstairs, we led almost completely separate lives. We had decided to get a divorce some time before that and were only waiting for a few details to be settled. I must say that I found myself absolutely charmed by the beauty of the Japanese women I had not seen for ten years. As soon as I woke up I would rush out of the house to roam through the streets and prowl through the dance halls and cafes. I would be very late before I returned home and I often didn’t see my wife for days. p. 3
