• Where you are asked to construct a graph, you must include it in your
answer script (if you’re unsure how to copy a graph from Excel, see Help
with Excel document #4 on Blackboard.) Label your graph appropri-
ately.
• When you submit your assignment it must be just one PDF document.
• Submit your assignment online via the link ‘Assignment 1 Submission’
under the Assignments tab of Blackboard (all instructions under Assign-
ments tab). The link will take you to the ECS system, log in using your
Blackboard username and password, but make sure you select ‘Student’
realm.
• Please ensure your assignment is reasonably well spaced so that it is
easier to mark.
• Late assignments will have 5% of your total mark deducted if received
after the due date but before midnight Monday 18 January. Assignments
can not be graded if received after 18 January.
• In case of illness, bereavement or significant technical problems, late
assignments may be accepted without incurring a penalty, but you must
email us on [email protected] to arrange this.
• You may work together on assignments, but you must write alone.

1. [53 marks] A study was conducted on the factors affecting the levels of mercury
in hair of fishermen in Kuwait and was reported in an article in the Environmental
Pollution journal (Al-Majed and Preston, 2000, pages 239-250). Total and methyl
mercury (MeHg) levels were measured from hair samples of 100 randomly selected
fishermen and an additional 35 randomly selected workers in a local construction
company. All 135 individuals lived in Doha fishing village at the time of the study.
The main aim of the study was to determine whether mercury levels were associated
with one or more of a number of other variables. The following information was
