The article that I chose was “Soft Shoe in Hard Times” by Maureen Dowd from the New York Times. Her argument in this opinion column is that George Bush is not taking the current social issues serious enough and things need to change if the United States is to recover. In order to form her argument she uses careful word choice, she also contrasts these word choices to juxtapose Bush’s attitude and the current state of social affairs, Dowd also employs some irony in an attempt to strengthen her argument. The words that Dowd chooses in the first few sentences help paint a picture of what the current financial problems the country is facing eg. the dollar’s crumpling, the recession’s thundering, the Dow’s bungee jumping Indicating that financial recession is more real than ever. She also uses economic meltdown and gasp inducing. She describes Bush as persona non grata on the campaign trail, indicating that he is not welcome in the Republicans effort in the election. And describes the current Republican members as morose. These word choices in the first few paragraphs of the column help to establish
