DiPietro 1 Stephen DiPietro Professor Conti ENH 211 0606 18 January 2013 O Thou , My Lovely Boy Many times during the crazy course of pop culture society we hear many incredible rumors about our favorite celebrities , some believable , but most not . Rumors have been floating around about famous actors , poets , musicians , and playwrights for centuries . One of the most widely known poets and playwrights from the late 1500s and early 1600s still has a major question about his life that is yet to be answered . There is some lucid evidence in many of William Shakespeare s sonnets that give the connotation that he may have had homoerotic preferences . Although this argument has gone back and forth over many centuries , I believe that the textual evidence in his sonnets is strong enough to show that Shakespeare was indeed homosexual . To fully understand this , let us take a look back to the time when Shakespeare himself was alive . There is factual proof that William Shakespeare was married to a woman named Anne Hathaway ; however , being in a committed marriage does not mean that man is heterosexual . In the late 16 th and early 17 th century , when Shakespeare spent his time on
DiPietro 2 Earth , homosexuality was extremely taboo . Shakespeare quite possibly could just have been conforming to the societal norms of his time period by getting married to a woman . Liza Picard writes : Homosexuality was viewed as an abhorrent divergence from the natural order , a crime punishable by death ”. Therefore , with coming out not being an option because same sex relations were absolutely loathed by society , William Shakespeare had to hide his true feelings very carefully . He , however , could not let these sexual urges escape his mind when he composed his sonnets . There are many instances in a large number of his sonnets where many people , including myself , find proof that Shakespeare is a homosexual . The first sonnet that I am going to discuss is number twenty . Over the years this has been a very controversial poem and I believe that it points towards Shakespeare having gay feelings for another man . Shakespeare starts off by saying A woman s face with Nature s own hand painted Hast thou , the master-mistress of my passion ; A woman s gentle heart , but not acquainted With shifting change , as is false women s fashion ; An eye more bright than theirs , less false in rolling ,”. In these opening lines of the sonnet although he does make reference to a woman s beauty , he does not seem to be talking to or about a woman . I believe this because of when Shakespeare writes two lines later , A man in hue , all hues in his controlling ”. The way that the tone of the poem flows , it leads directly to that line when Shakespeare first mentions a description of a man .
