Wellbutrin Generic name: bupropion; Trade name: Wellbutrin Dosage: 100mg twice/day. After 3 day up to 100mg three times/day Classification: antidepressant, smoking deterrents, aminoketones Reasons for medication: prescribed for depression and smoking problems Therapeutic effects: patient will experience diminished depression and a decreased craving for cigarettes Adverse effects: seizures, suicidal thoughts, agitation, headache, dry mouth, tremor. Lab test considerations include monitoring hepatic and renal function closely in patients with kidney or liver impairment. Teaching: instruct patient to take as directed. Take missed doses as soon as possible. Missed doses for smoking should be omitted. Prilosec Generic name: Omeprazole; Trade name: Prilosec Dosage: 20mg once/day for GERD; 40mg once/day for ulcers related to H. Pylori Classification: antiulcer agents, proton pump inhibitors Reason prescribed: prescribed for ulcers in the gastric lumen Therapeutic effects: diminished accumulation of acid in the gastric lumen with lessened gastro esophageal reflux. Adverse effects: dissiness, drowsiness, abdominal pain, acid regurgitation. Lab test considerations include monitoring CBC with differential periodically during therapy. Teaching: Take medication as directed, caution patient to avoid driving Restoril Generic name: temazepam; trade name: restoril Dosage: 15-30mg at bedtime initially if needed; some patients may require only 7.5 Classification: sedative/hypnotics, benzodiazepines Reason prescribed: prescribed for insomnia Therapeutic effects: relief of insomnia Adverse effects: abnormal thinking, behavior changes, hangover, constipation, diarrhea. Teaching: take as directed, caution patient to avoid driving or other activities requiring alertness, caution patient to avoid the use of alcohol with medication Valium Generic name: Diazepam; trade name: Valium Dosage: 2-10mg po 2-4 times/day Classification: anti-anxiety, anti-convulsant, sedative, skeletal muscle relaxant, benzodiazepines
