Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to investigate the absorption properties of the food dye FD&C #1 in consumer samples, to construct a reference plot that follows Beer’s Law, and to determine the concentration of Blue FD&C #1 in consumer samples using a spectrophotometer. Procedure: See composition book pages 30- 31 Data: See attached Calculations: Summary of Results: Standard # 1 2 3 4 Absorbance 0.00 .176 .365 .701 Concentration (mg/L) 0.00 2.00 4.00 8.00 Slope (m): 0.08700 y-intercept (b): 0.00800 Concentration coefficient: 0.9996 Sample Identity Powerade Mouthwash Gatorade: Riptide rush Absorbance .714 .278 .322 Concentration (mg/L)

Unformatted text preview: 8.11 3.10 3.61 Conclusion: The purpose of this experiment was to first get a baseline using 4 standard solutions than use that to determine the concentration of blue #1 in a couple of commercial products. The purpose was achieved and my partner and I were able to determine the blue due #1 concentration in Powerade, Mouthwash, and Gatorade. One source of error could be not calibrating the spectrophotometer correctly. Another source of error could include not calculating something correctly or not bringing out a calculation to the right amount of decimal places. Also, not measuring out the correct amount of solution to mix for the standard solutions could be a source of error....
