August 30, 2007 Notes-Biology Science is Based on Reasoning Inductive reasoning o Used it he development of scientific theories o A Generalization is created from many observations o E.g., the cell theory (all living things are made of one or more cells) arises from many observations that all indicate a cellular basis for life Deductive Reasoning o Generating hypotheses bases on a well supported generalization (theory) o E.g., based on the cell theory, any newly discovered organism would be expected to be composed of cells Evolution o Three natural processed underlie evolution o Much of organism variability Unifying Theory of Biology o Abundant evidence has accumulated to support evolutionary theory since Darwin and Wallace proposed in the mid-1800s o Those who dismiss evolutions as “just a theory” don’t understand the scientific definition of a theory o Evolution explains how divers forms of life originated through changes in theory genetic make up o Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace formulate the basis of our modern understanding of evolution o Evolution arises as a consequence of three natural processes. o
