HIST2301-167 Outline Thursday, March 27, 2014 “What Motivates McCarthy?” – Anti-Communism and Red Scare - Communism as Monolithic Evil - McCarthyism and “Witch Hunts” - Anti-Communist Activism Introduction and Review Communism as Monolithic Evil - Fundamental ideological differences: Russia became communist in 1917, American failed to see the differences in communism and viewed it as one monolithic evil; Dwight Eisenhower will become president after Truman in the same year that Stalin dies; Khrushchev will take over leading the USSR - Lack of diplomacy and communication: Khrushchev was Stalin’s right hand man; Khrushchev inidicates that he may be open to changes, and criticizes Stalin as well as some of Stalin’s followers, he stated that he had a desire for people co-existence; Krushchev visits the United States in 1959 and meets president Eisenhower, people believe this may begin a new peaceful relationship, Eisenhower had no desire to negotiate or change the current policies, Khrushchev gives a speech saying we will bury you, meaning communism is going to triumph and the Russians will outlive you; Eisenhower wants to continue with “Containment”; his advisor advises a new policy called brinksmanship that pushes containment to the limit, the idea was to get as close to nuclear war as possible without ever dropping a bomb. People are terrified that as we keep pushing brinksmanship that someone will actually drop the bomb. The U.S. and the USSR are massively increasing their stock of nuclear weapons; there are all kinds of domestic organizations that promote building fall out systems and teaching children to duck and cover, McCarthy is fueling this fear.
