Kmieciak 1 Zachary Kmieciak Ms. Pilat English 161 – 14446 2/7/2007 Economics of Obesity The USA is one of the world’s most advanced nations, however one problem that the country has is obesity. The US has become “The world’s fattest country,” (BBC News) meaning that it has the highest percentage of obesity in the world. In 2000, only cigarette smoking was the cause of more deaths, 435,000, than obesity and other sedentary lifestyles, 400,000. Not only is obesity linked to death it is also a cause of other various health conditions including hypertension, high cholesterol, coronary heart disease, type 2-diabetes, depression, and various types of cancer. The increase of obesity can be linked directly to genetics, however it also has the advance of the country to blame. Obesity is a problem that is facing the entire nation, not just those that have the disease. Obesity is not a small problem in fact, “Obesity and overweight rates remained steady from approximately 1960 until about 1980. Since then they have spiraled almost out of control. Between 1980 and 2000, the percentage of obese adults grew from 14 percent to 30 percent, and the percentage of overweight children rose from 5 percent to 14 percent.” Obesity also affects tax payers and people that are not linked easily to the
