Zachary Kmieciak Chemistry Lab 11 October 11, 2007 Tammi/Cassie The Calcium in Milk Introduction The goal of this lab is to determine the amount of calcium in 2% and skim milk. Each type of milk will contain different amounts of calcium. A calcium indicator will turn the solution pink, and green if excess calcium is present. KOH is used to raise the Ph to over 13. Results and Discussion In order to determine the calcium content in the skim milk, we must first calculate the molarity of the EDTA used in the experiment. In order to do so, we must use the equation M EDTA = M(Ca 2+ ) x V(Ca 2+ ) / V EDTA . M(Ca 2+ ) = .03 [mol / L] V(Ca 2+ ) = 4.66 ml .03 x 4.66 / 5 = M EDTA V EDTA = 5.0 ml M EDTA = .028 [mol / L] Next, the moles of EDTA started with were found by multiplying the molarity of EDTA from above by the volume of EDTA used. The equation is Moles EDTA = M EDTA x V EDTA .
