Richard Little Mrs. Boyer English 160 11726 13 September 2006 Explanation of Extinction The main idea of Gould’s essay is not to list any sort of hypothesis about the extinction of dinosaurs, but to try and explain to the readers where these hypotheses come from. He explains early in the essay that he believes that when an article of a certain idea is printed that people would be able to debate over it and respond to it much better if they knew the background of where that theory came from. He also states that theories like this one become more reasonable when they collect more and more feedback and research and he believes that by explaining the ideals behind each theory that there will be more feedback. He starts to demonstrate his own theory through another theory, the theory of the extinction of dinosaurs. He tells the reader the three most acknowledged ideas of extinction; sex, drugs, and rock and roll and by rock and roll I mean a giant comet crashing into the earth. Then Gould proceeds to explain each theory in great detail. This explanation of each theory
