Seven Years’ War Earlier iteration to the American revolution: - Canada became a British country - England became the world’s preeminent empire Lasted nine years (1754-1763) - Why? Because the British didn’t declare war on French until 1756 Also known as the French and Indian War etc. (1754-1763) - War had many names due to the fights happening in several places - Was the first global war (Europe, India, south America, north America etc.) The fight consisted of English with native Americans versus the French with native Americans - Name French and Indian War doesn’t make sense due to native Americans fighting on both sides The war began to determine who would be the supreme imperial power of the world Fought for: Who would have most territory (who would control North America) Who would be able to trade with North Americans and Indian subcontinent Territorial claims by European Powers: England: Located along the Eastern Seaboard of America as well as in some parts of Canada - Wanted extra territories and room for expansion France: Located and claimed interior region of Canada and territorial US - Wants: access to trades with Natives because of fur (Valuable commodity in Europe) Spain: Located in Florida and contemporary Mexico, Cuba, and South America - Wants: access to sugar islands and metals in the Caribbean Native Americans: West of the Appalachian Mountains - Included: Iroquois, Cherokees, Hurons, Algonquins, Abenakis and Mi’kmaq’s - Wants: revenge on each other (Iroquois expanded, and groups wanted their revenge), also to make sure their territory were no longer encroached upon by settlers *Native Americans from different groups were not always fond of each other - Saw the three countries as possible avenues to get one up on older enemies *North America had more land but less commodities than Caribbean due to the sugar War: Iroquois + Cherokee were with England (France: Hurons) - Natives were fighting each other along with this war Cooperation with Natives: Both the French and the British cooperated with Native Americans to use their forces in the Seven Years’ War.
