Feminist Criticism Theory: 1960s – Present What is Feminist Criticism? Feminist theory concerns itself with the ways in which literature and other works of art reinforce the economic, social, political and psychological oppression of women. This lens analyzes how out culture is fundamentally rooted in patriarchy Patriarchy: a system in society where men dominate and hold power, and women are largely excluded from said power. Marginalize: excluded from or existing outside of mainstreams society, groups etc. The purpose of the feminist school of thought is to uncover misogyny in literature and/or art forms, both explicitly and implicitly. Misogyny: hatred or dislike, or prejudice against women. Prejudice: judgement or opinion about individuals based on preconceived notions/ideas that are not based in facts. Feminist theory is also concerned with the less explicit forms of oppression such as the early exclusion of women writers historically.
