Feminist Criticism Theory:
1960s – Present
What is Feminist Criticism?
Feminist theory concerns itself with the ways in which literature and
other works of art reinforce the economic, social, political and
psychological oppression of women.
This lens analyzes how out culture is fundamentally rooted in
a system in society where men dominate and hold power,
and women are largely excluded from said power.
excluded from or existing outside of mainstreams
society, groups etc.
The purpose of the feminist school of thought is to uncover misogyny
in literature and/or art forms, both explicitly and implicitly.
hatred or dislike, or prejudice against women.
judgement or opinion about individuals based on
preconceived notions/ideas that are not based in facts.
Feminist theory is also concerned with the less explicit forms of
oppression such as the early exclusion of women writers historically.
