Essay 7 What are the functions of a plasma membrane (cell surface membrane) and what aspects of its molecular structure promote these functions? Four Functions of a Plasma Membrane: 1. Stable, Strong 2. Fluid, Elastic, deformable 3. Selectively permeable 4. Form compartments, spontaneously * The membrane is a spontaneous, noncovalent, self-assembly of a large number of small molecules of amphiphillic nature. Amphiphillic: molecule with different regions of opposite properties. Structure - Functions: 1. Forms Compartments and Stability/Strength: Forms a lipid bilayer with the polar head dissolved in water and the hypophobic tails pushed together. This is also called a bilayer micelle and the tails are forced to seal at their edges and spontaneously form compartments surrounded by a bilayer. HYDORPHOBICTY is the basis for the strength and stability and their spontaneous production of compartments and these compartments regulate/integrate metabolism. 2. Fluid/elasticity
