02/19/2008 The Power of Perception o Two Key Questions How do thoughts relate to the ultimate stress experience? What tools and techniques can help manage thoughts and perceptions to prevent stress and enhance the quality of life? Perception o A person’s cognitive (mental) interpretation of events o The most critical aspect in preventing unnecessary and unhealthy stress o In nearly all cases it is the perception of the event, not the event itself, that causes stress Stress comes from within and perception is what typically initiates the fight-or-flight response We are very rarely placed in a truly threatening situation The world-A stressful place or not??? o No event in life is Is inherently stressful Causes stress universally for everyone o We make stressful interpretations of events Some aspect of the situation will inflict pain or discomfort There will be a threat to our sense of well-being and comfort KEY TERMS o Cognition A mental process that consists of thinking and reasoning skills o Cognitive appraisal
