“Routine recreational activity” One of the views that Enloe’s article shows is that many soldiers view “prostitution as a routine recreational activity (p.116).” How can prostitution be an accepted form of recreational activity you say? Well, it becomes accepted within the military because of politicians’ view that by not allowing and making it an easily acceptable commodity, more militarized rapes will occur. If prostitution is made available like any other commercialized product, it is assumed that these soldiers who would have raped will not engage in the practice. Why do our government’s politicians come to feel this way? This is because of a longstanding thought process of connecting the two separate practices of rape and prostitution and validating the one practice of prostitution by explaining how it prevents militarized rape situations. This standpoint is wrong. Both practices are wrong in their own respects in that they both promote violent sexual acts towards women that are
