Unformatted text preview: Theories of Covalent Bonding • There are two primary theories for understanding and describing covalent bonding: – Valence Bond (VB) theory – Molecular Orbital (MO) theory Valence Bond Theory (Our text calls it the “Localized Electron” Model) • What is it? – An approximate theory of quantum mechanics used to explain covalent bonding. • Theoretical basis- When a covalent bond is formed, an orbital on one atom overlaps with an orbital on the other atom.- A pair of electrons is shared by the two atoms. The electron pair is located in the overlapping orbitals and the electrons must have opposite spins.- The greater the orbital overlap, the stronger the covalent bond. Application of Valence Bond Theory • H-H bond formation in H 2 can be nicely described by valence bond theory. Some Examples • Use valence bond theory to describe covalent bond formation in the following examples: – HF – F 2 Valence Bond Theory Descriptions of HF and F 2 Another Example • Use valence bond theory to describe covalent bond formation in the following examples: – BF 3 Hybridization • Hybridization – The atomic orbitals which participate in bonding are different from those in the isolated atoms. – These new atomic orbitals are formed via hybridization....
