Service Learning Reflection Paper Are We What We Eat? Food, Health, & Controversy Cynthia Morgan ABSTRACT Volunteering on Hermitage Farms changed the way I perceived farmers and the foods that I eat. Being able to experience the hard work that happens on the land has allowed me to appreciate every bite of food I take. Before this class I didn’t think much about where my food came from or the distance it takes to get to my kitchen. But knowing that there are always organic options that are near by allows me to make better choices in my eating habits that will help with my health.

2 SERVICE LEARNING REFLECTION PAPER I remember my first time driving to the farm , we turned off the main street and I thought we were lost . The road turned into gravel and the entire time I thought I was on somebody else s property , but then I saw the little sign that said Hermitage Farms . I pulled in , observing the land that I was going to be volunteering on . When I stepped out of my car and looked around I instantly thought it was gorgeous . It was in the evening so the sun was beginning to set , there was a barn and two little sheds that fit perfectly into the scenery . I noticed the sheep caged off to the right , and a fenced in area for the chickens . Behind that was a piece of land with corn stalks and closer to me was an area of the field for vegetables to be grown on . However when I met Ben he was not the stereotypical farmer that I thought he would be; he was young, wearing shorts and t-shirt, and had glasses. Which was not what I imagined him to look like, but I was able to move on from this fairly quickly. I was so excited to be able to volunteer on the farm , I knew that it would involve labor but it would be good for me . I thought to myself , this could be the place that I go to escape for a little bit because at the moment standing there I felt like I was in a different world . Brittany and I arrived at the farm in the late morning , it was our first day of actually doing work and we were excited to see what Ben had planned for us . When Ben came out he had buckets in his hands with packets of seed , he told us that we were going to be planting vegetables today . Since I wore outdoor sandals I watched as Ben and Brittany walked through the soil making lines to mark the columns . After this was done ,

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
