Matt Pautler Martelli 10:00 November 1, 2007 Descartes Rene Descartes was a famous philosopher and mathematician. He was born on March 31 1596 in a town called La Haye (since renamed Descartes) in France. His father, Joachim was the son of a minor nobleman and his mother died when he was only a year old. From 1606 to 1614, he attended the Jesuit college of La Flèche in Anjou where he studied classics, logic, Aristotelian philosophy, and mathematics. From his time at school Descartes claimed to have learned very little and in 1616 he enlisted at the military school at Breda. From there he went on to serve in the army of Prince Maurice of Nassau and after a year was transferred to the army of Maximillian, Duke of Bavaria. While there he had a dream which he interepreted to be a message from God to devote his life to the rational quest for certain truth. After ending his military career, Descartes traveled around Europe and after eight years, he decided it was time to settle down and so he moved to Holland.
